CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) – Though the dance industry suffered tremendously during the pandemic shutdowns, two dance instructors managed to grow their business.

Bernadette Torres and her husband Carlo Di Dio have expanded their passion for ballet into a passion for business.

“While we were dancing, we started teaching as well, so we started building the credibility as a coach and teacher,” said Di Dio.

Quando e come hai deciso di diventare un danzatore?

Sicuramente devo ringraziare mia madre per aver intuito la mia passione quando ancora ero molto piccolo. Mi raccontava che mi vedeva ballare davanti la TV e ha colto l’opportunità di iscrivermi al primo anno di danza quando Enzo Gadaleta ha fatto nascere la prima scuola di danza di Procida. Avevo 8 anni quando ho iniziato, e da quel momento ho intrapreso un percorso importante che mi ha permesso di andare avanti e seguire la mia passione. 

Two children on two different continents shared the same dream to become premier ballet dancers. 

In 2010, the same two children — now adults — were living their dream as they became principal ballet dancers at San Diego’s California Ballet Company. Carlo Di Dio (’17, management) and Bernadette Mirentxu Torres (’16, management) met only two days after Di Dio’s arrival in the U.S. from his home in Procida, Italy. They would soon find they had much more in common than ballet: they also shared the same desire to establish and manage a dance-focused business.  ​

At 14, he became a professional ballet dancer, falling in love with its challenges.

 

“You’re considered a professional dancer when you finish your schooling,” Di Dio said. “But during your schooling you have the opportunity to perform with the company so you can grow your knowledge and understand how rehearsals run on stage.”                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        

Ha iniziato i Suoi studi di danza molto precocemente, quando ha deciso di voler diventare una danzatrice di professione?

Quando avevo tre anni ho detto ai miei genitori: “Diventerò una ballerina”. È divertente perché i miei genitori non hanno mai avuto niente a che fare con la danza, forse, fino a  quel momento, avevano visto solo un balletto in tutta la loro vita. E comunque non ho iniziato a danzare prima dei sei anni. Dal quel punto in poi la danza mi ha rapita in tutta la sua bellezza.
